CatheClear© Medical Device Project

Project Description

The Catheclear© project was a part of the senior project and startup collaboration with four Electrical Engineers. Through micro spectroscopy, we were able to obtain the concentration level of certain chemical compounds. We employed a microspectrometer by Hamamatsu to perform the spectral analysis obtained through a flow cuvette. We read the analog data obtained through the flow cuvette holding the sample and then digitally analyze the converted data set. This was then correlated to a certain concentration of a chemical compound, which is the key indicator of a UTI.

The total layout of the Catheclear. This device was meant to be solid as a package to be used inline with commonly used catheters in order to detect UTIs early.

Absorption graphs from mass spectrometer samples showed the possibility of differentiating between commonly occurring nitrate in urine and infection-indicating nitrite in urine.
